The Grey of Luachair, Fionn’s First Teacher
Liath Luachra — “the Grey One of Luachair” — was the warrior-woman who raised and trained the young Fionn mac Cumhaill in hiding alongside the druidess Bodhmall, after his father Cumhall was killed. The two women concealed the infant son of the dead Fianna leader from Goll mac Morna and the Clan Morna, who had reason to want Cumhall’s son dead before he could grow into a claim on his father’s position.
Bodhmall gave Fionn his druidic and intellectual formation. Liath Luachra gave him the physical skills: hunting, running, fighting. The two worked together on the slopes of Sliabh Bladma for years, keeping him alive and trained and hidden.
She also held Cumhall’s Treasure Bag — the Crane Bag of the Fianna, the sacred institutional object full of magical items. When Fionn was old enough and had claimed his father’s place, he came for it. She ran. He chased her down. The training she had given him was what made him fast enough to catch her.
She is Fionn’s first teacher — the woman whose work in the hills of Laois made everything that followed possible.
